Saribung Pass Trek

Saribung is a peak standing 6328 m high above the sea level in the isolated region of Mustang. And Saribung pass is lies at 5600 m high. It lies near the environs of Mt. Damodar near the border area of Tibet. There are very few climbers to reach the summit of Mt. Saribung. The trek to the Saribung pass is a rugged trail into high cliff sides.

About the trek

Saribung trek passes through Mustang, its hidden valleys and Nar Phu valley. The trek is to pass through Tibetan lifestyle of different villages, culture, religion and monasteries. Mustang is known for its lost and hidden valleys with many ancient and holy caves that are mysterious. Through this trek we get to explore it as well.

This trek is in the mid-western Nepal and includes the breathtaking views of mountain ranges. Like Mt. Annapurna (8091 m), Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167 m) and Mt. Manaslu (8163 m) and offering views of beautiful landscapes.

The trek is about a minimum 6 hours daily walk and is suitable for challenging experiences. And the people who can for 6 hours or more can do this trekking.

The suitable time for this trek is during Autumn and Spring.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival to Kathmandu

With your landing in Kathmandu, you will be taken to the hotel with warm welcome. After the registration and lodging is done; the guide will take to Thamel for a short tour as it’s the center attraction/tourist hub of the city. With a variety of restaurants to choose to grab a meal.

Day 2 – Exploring Kathmandu

As a city of many religious sites, you get to explore the culturally rich sites Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa on the north side of the city. And sites including Garden of Dreams, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath Temple on the north side. Exploring some of the heritage sites and tasting some of the local foods around there.

Day 3 – Kathmandu to Pokhara

After exploring some of the places in Kathmandu, we head towards Pokhara which is 200 km away from Kathmandu. We can reach there both by bus (6 hours of drive) or by air. Pokhara is one of the most visited sites for those who visit Nepal. There are many things in Pokhara that attract tourists, some of them are Fewa lake and the lakeside environment, Peace Pagoda.

Day 4 – To Jomson and then trek to Kagbeni

On the 4th day we fly to Jomsom which takes about 25 minutes and its very windy there in the afternoon. After reaching Jomsom we start the trek to Kagbeni along with the Kali Gandaki river bed. After walking 3 hours we reach our first stop at Ekle-bhatti village and reach Kagbeni after an hour walk.

Day 5 – To Chele village

The walk today is 5 hours. After the special permit we start our trek through up and downhills and it’s windy and sandy. Firstly, we will reach Tangbe village and then reach Chhusang. After crossing the river, falling down from the cliff and 11/2 hour walk we reach Chele village.

Day 6 – To Syanboche village

Today we climb Taklam La Pass, about 3624 m high above the sea level and head for Syanboche village. It is an 8 km walk and through narrow stretches. Offers an amazing view of Tilicho peak, Mt. Nilgiri, Damodar hill and many more.

Day 7 – To Ghami

We walk 12 km that takes about 5-6 hours and reach Ghami from Syanboche village. We climb through Yamda La (3850 m) and Nyi Pass (4010 m) and some local tea houses and villages.

Day 8 – To Charang village

We cross the Ghaymi river, climb a plateau, pass Mani wall (Secret stone of Buddhism). About 6 hours of walk and we reach Charang village for overnight stay.

Day 9- To Lo-Manthang

From Charang village the next stop we head for is Lo-Manthang where the trail both ascends and descends. We go through the pass of Lo which is at 3850 m high and see the astounding view of Lo-Manthang.

Day 10 – Exploring Lo-Manthang

This day we stay and explore Lo-Manthang, a beautiful walled city near the hill of Tibetan border. Some attractions like Namyal Gompa, Tingkhar Gompa and surrounding panoramic views of the Himalayas.

Day 11 – To Yara

With the delicious breakfast, we ascend to Day-La which takes about an hour and then begin our descent from Dhi village which will take another one hour and can have lunch there. After one and half hours of short steep climb, we reach Yara village. We can see innumerable caves at the stone walls there. We could stay overnight at the tent.

Day 12 – To Luri Cave Monastery

With 3-4 hours of walking, we reach Luri Gompa. We take a 2 hours walk through the river route to the Luri cave monastery. There are actually two monasteries.

Day 13 – To Ghuma Thanti

After crossing the 5100m pass, we will walk through the barren valley. It takes another 5-6 hours of walking to reach Ghuma Thanti and we stay overnight there.

Day 14 – To Namta Khola

The ups and downs walk continues and we reach high altitude Damodar Kunda after another 5600m pass. And continue towards Namta Khola through 7 hours of walk. We need to pack lunches as there are no possibilities of cooking.

Day 15 – Trek from Namta Khola to Saribung Base Camp

We will reach Saribung Base camp with 6 hours of walk and make lunch packs here as well.

Day 16 – Acclimatization day

This day is free for exploration of surrounding hills and we acclimatize for further expedition.

Day 17 – Trek from Base Camp to Nagoru

From the base camp we go down and follow  the small stream till we reach Nagrou. Which will take 4 hours of walk to reach 4400 m high.

Day 18 – To Phu Gaon

The trek starts with a walk on the barren valley and takes 5- 6 hours to reach Phu Gaon. We can get breathtaking views of snow capped mountains on the way to Phu Gaon. There exists Tashi Lakhang Monastery which is one of the oldest monasteries.

Day 19 – To Meta village

This day, after we pass the village and reach Kyang after trekking down a narrow valley. It’s a place where we can find multiple remnants of forts of Khampa. And with a mind blowing view of Mt. Lamjung and Mt. Annapurna II we reach Meta village.

Day 20 – To Koto village

Today it’s about a 6 hours of walk to reach Koto village after crossing many suspension bridges.

Day 21 – To Dharapani

From Koto we head to Dharapani taking 5 hours of walk and stay there overnight.

Day 22 – To Jagat village

Reaching Jagat village takes about 5 hours of walk, descending down along the Marsyangdi river.

Day 23 – To Bhulbhule village

It’s the last day of trek which is about 5 hours of walk until we reach Bulbhule village.

Day 24 – To Kathmandu

After having breakfast in Bulbhule village it’s 6 hours of drive to Kathmandu.
