Nepal Police Hospital

Nepal Police Hospital was established with an intention to provide free health services to in-service policemen, their families and ex- servicemen and their spouses. This hospital was inaugurated by the late King  Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev on the 27th of Chaitra, 2040 BS. It commenced OPD services and 25 bedded indoor services through 5 medical doctors, a few nurses, paramedics and administrative office.The infrastructure of the hospital was built with the financial support of the Government of Nepal and voluntary contribution of the police personnel. Some instruments and equipment were donated by the Government of India and a Japanese club. 

Nepal Police Hospital

The government of Nepal has been bearing all the expenses of the hospital ever since its establishment (infrastructure development, upgrading, human resources and equipment ). Its routine annual budget is allocated by the government. But it is inadequate to meet the increasing demand for health services of the staff of the Police organization.The hospital has expanded its services to the common people also. The Police Welfare Fund of Nepal Police has established a trust to provide health services to the family members of the serving policemen and ex- servicemen and their spouse.

This organization supports the purchase of medicines for physically and mentally handicapped and Renal Failure patients. It also provides an additional variable budget every year to further support the above mentioned group of patients. Though the spectrum of services provided by the hospital in the initial stage was minimal, it had a great positive impact on all policemen and medical professionals.

Main Objectives of Nepal Police Hospital

  • Provide preventive, curative and rehabilitative health services.
  •  Train doctors /nurses/paramedics and students.
  • Research for continuous development and improvement in health indicators.
  •  Conduct workshops, symposiums, seminars and discussion programs on health.
  •  Develop the hospital as an institution with state of the art facilities and services.

Services of The Hospital

This hospital has continued to make big efforts into the path of healthcare in the nation. It has provided a wide range of services to the community starting from emergency care to general, medical and surgical care in numbers of medical and surgical subspecialties. The hospital is rapidly developing its standard into the true multi speciality and super speciality hospital with the experts in Diagnostic imaging and Therapeutic areas.

1. Outpatient Department

 The OPD services of the hospital runs from Sunday to Friday and is closed during the public holidays. It provides its OPD service from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The patients and visitors have to register for the service from the reception counter at the main lobby of the Hospital. As it is the tertiary level health care centre it has various departments from where many care are provided to the patient. They provide general check up, comprehensive care, paediatric and adult chest, heart, gastro- hepatic, neurological and endocrinology, general and specialized surgery, female health problems and obstetrics care, skin and sexually transmitted disease, mental health issues and de- addiction. The hospital also has extensive OPD services like pre anaesthesia check up, Orthopaedic check up, head, neck, ear, eye and nose clinic.

Physiotherapy and rehabilitation, Speech therapy , Yoga and clinic, dental surgery and De- addiction clinics are also fully functioning services at the hospital.

2.  Emergency Service

The hospital has the 24 hour emergency throughout the 365 days of the year. It provides its emergency service under the ” Guideline for Health Institutes Established Upgrade Standard, 2070”. It is the 17 bedded emergency run by well trained house officers and experienced health assistants with Triage and Trauma care. The emergency department is well prepared for disasters, adequate resuscitation areas, trained and updated paramedics . It has the protocol following system (management, admission and referral) and maintains the confidentiality of the patient. The emergency services are research oriented. Fully equipped emergency lab and radio diagnostic services, emergency response system with Trained assistant (First aid and BLS training) and ambulance.

3. Operation theatre and Minor Procedures

The hospital has fully equipped operation theatres where minor to major surgery is performed. Minor procedures like cardiology services such as ECG, TMT (Treadmill Stress Test), ABMP, Holter, Echo, Coronary Angiography, Coronary Angiography & Angioplasty, Renal Angiography , PTMC, PPI, TPI, Pericardiocentesis . Endoscopy and Colonoscopy are performed under gastro- hepatology service. Peritoneocentesis, pleural fluid tappings, Bronchoscopy and PFTs are performed routinely. Dialysis Services (Peritoneal and Hemodialysis) are also done routinely. OT services (major, intermediate, minor and Day care OT services) are provided by the department of General surgery under Gastrointestinal surgery, open urology, Paediatric surgery, Neurosurgery, Endourology surgery and Laparoscopy surgery.

4. Clinical Laboratory Services

There are three separate labs in the hospital carrying out all the necessary tests such as biochemistry, microbiology and pathology. Culture sensitivity, staining procedures, Microscopy, Stool occult blood, Blood for Malaria parasites (PS and QBC) and microfilaria, Bone marrow/splenic aspirate for LD bodies, Optimal, rk39, DAT, and a wide range of immunological services for different diseases are performed.

The tests like Histopathology, Cytopathology (FNAC/USG Guided FNAC/CT guided FNAC/PAP Smears/Fluids/Sputum/BAL), Hematology (CBC, Urine for RE and Ketone Bodies, Bence Jones Protein, Pregnancy ELISA, Semen Analysis, Body fluid analysis, AEC, ESR, Retics, PS, BT, CT, PT, aPTT, HbF, Osmotic fragility, Coombs test, Blood grouping, G6PD, BM Cytology, PS for Cytology, etc.), Special staining and chemistry, Cyto Special Staining (AFB/PAS/Mucicarmine), Histo special staining (AFB, PAS, Giemsa, Oil Red O, Masson Trichrome, Congo Red, Reticulin, Melanin bleach, Iron stain, Gram’s staining, etc.) and Cytochemistry (MPO/PAS/Sudan Black). Immunohistochemistry (B-cell, T-cell, CD stains, desmin, ER, PR, EMA, NSE, Thyroglobulin, CEA, AFP, etc) are also done. Modern Lab Information Software (LIS) with Sample Tracking System ensures accuracy in sample processing, quality of tests and timely delivery of reports.

5. Radio- diagnosis and Imaging

The services provided by the radiology department of the hospital are as follows

  • X-Ray, CT-Scan, MRI, USG (Video X-Ray) – available round-the-clock
  • Digital Mammography with stereotactic biopsy
  • Colour Doppler with flow studies
  • Barium contrast studies
  • Bedside X-Ray through the latest portable machine.

6.  Immunization

The hospital has been providing immunization services since 1986 AD. They have been providing this service to make a National strategy to eradicate the different kinds of diseases from children in Nepal successfully. This service is provided every Monday of the week. It is conducted under the national program and serves the children of police and civil persons. The immunization program covers the vaccines such as DPT, Polio, BCG, Measles, T.T and Hepatitis B.

7. DOTS ( Directly Observed Treatment Short Course)

DOTS program has been conducted in the hospital since March 17, 2000 AD. It is a program run under the National Tuberculosis Centre. This clinic provides a facility for diagnosis, treatment and management of complications.

8. Family Planning Program

The hospital has been providing family health services free of cost including family planning means and methods like condom, IUCD, Depo-Provera and contraceptive pills. This program is run by the Ministry of Health.

9. In Patient Department

 The patient services provided by the hospital are prompt and efficient through the huge infrastructure, ample bed facility and quality and experienced doctors and staff. Each clinic has its own inpatient ward and a core team of dedicated staff. Separate Ward blocks for Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Psychiatry and Maternal and Child Health Care (MCH) are present in BPKIHS along with a multicomplex for Orthopaedics, ENT, Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Oral Surgery. There is Intensive Care Units (ICU) for paediatrics (PICU), Neonates (NICU), Maternal (MICU), Deluxe (DICU) and general. A Separate Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and Medical ICU also runs as Inpatient Service. Tropical Ward (part of the Medical ward) provides care and treatment for tropical and infectious diseases patients separately. The hospital also provides free meals to the patient.

The Nepal Police Hospital is the hospital with the great quality and comprehensive patient care. It has marked its name in the field of Health Care Centres.
