Melamchi is the municipality in the Sindhupalchowk district of the central Nepal. It is the valley with the typical narrow, steep Himalayan river valley. This valley is very rich in water resources. The Memalchi valley has lower part and upper part. In which the upper part receives more rainfall in the year that the lower part. It comprises of the most of the Hindu family whereas the Buddhist culture is more in the upper part of the Melamchi valley. This place is surrounded by the Melamchi river which is the tributary of Indrawoti river originating from Jugal Himal.
The valley area is about 330 km sq. It is highly made up of quartzite rocks with the cultivable lands. The forest around this site ranges from the tropical to the alpine zone towards the North of the Jugal Himal. There are about 102 plants species in the forest of this valley. The upper part of the Melamchi valley is Langtang National Park which has contributed to the most of the tourism sector. The Hindu culture has dominated the settlements in the valley whereas Buddhist are more prevalent in high mountain of Melamchi. The mid part of the two region is the meeting point of the two cultures.
There are more than 11 Hindu temples and shrines and about 14 monasteries. The main occupation of the people here is agriculture. Irrigation is done from the Melamchi river. About 15% of population use its water directly for the purpose of drinking. The main project being constructed in the Melamchi is Melamchi Water Supply Project (MWSP). It has the objective of providing water from Melamchi river through 25.83 km long tunnel to the reservoir in the Sundarijal. The main objective of project is to provide drinking water to the people of Kathmandu valley.
It is the best place to visit who wants to experience the hills, rivers, small streams, waterfalls, landscapes and snowy mountain in eastern part of our country. This valley is the true definition of natural beauty and the cultural values. We can get here from the public transportation from the new bus park of Kathmandu.
