Makalu Circuit Trek

Mt. Makalu 8485m is fifth highest mountain in the world where Makalu Circuit Trek is one of the most challenging & adventure journeys in Nepal since the entire circuit covers numerous numbers of difficult high passes need to accomplish such as Sherpani Col 6110m, West Col 6190m, Amphu  Lapcha Pass 5850m and many more. Our experienced Sherpa crew and official trekking planner team would be highly anxious for your safety and security concerning altitude sickness and possible illness while making your successful adventure holiday, we highly recommend previous trekking experience and good physical fitness of every adventure seeking trekker likely to accomplish Makalu Circuit.  The trek is a perfect combination of less explored off the beaten trails to popular trails where we spend our maximum days inside remote and less visited areas of Makalu National Park and back via the world’s popular classic trail of Everest Base Camp.

Makalu Circuit Trek

The best time for this Makalu Circuit Trek is September to November and March to May.  The trekking trail firstly begins with scenic and soft walking then gradually towards tough and high adventures. After walking more than a week until reaching at Makalu Base Camp at 4800 meters where we take an acclimatization day would be worthwhile before attempting a serious pass Sherpani Col at 6180 meters. Again, the trail continuously becomes wilder until we accomplish West col at 6190 meters and Amphu Lapcha Pass at 5850 meters. After there, our journey starts descending with a safe and comfortable walk that joins the popular classic trail of Everest; towards Chukkung, Tengboche, Namche Bazaar then finally to Lukla to fly back to Kathmandu.

Day 1 Flight to Tumlingtar and Drive to Num

Early morning you will be picked up by your guide and driven to the Airport for a flight to Tumlingtar which takes nearly 40 minutes. We will be welcomed by the rest of the crew at Tumlingtar airport. We stop for a short refreshment while you will be introduced with the rest of the crews. Then we drive to Num which takes nearly 4 hours. 

Day 2 Trek to Seduwa

We commence our journey after having breakfast early in the morning. We follow Porter and supporting crew along with guide. The trail goes downhill all the way to the bottom where we cross the mighty Arun river which is known as the lifeline of this region. Then the trail goes uphill all the way to Seduwa. We stop for launch at Hedagna Gadhi which is small settlement inhabited by Rai people. The walk is very scenic with lush green forest and heart shaking cliff from where we can see bottom.

Day 3 Trek to Tashogaon

We commence after having breakfast early in the morning. The trail goes through lush green forest accompanied by sparkling streams flossing downward. The trail passes through small villages like Murmidanda, Nabagaon where we stop for launch. We can see the hospitable folk with light grim on their face always attracting. 

Day 4 Trek to Kaumadanda

We commence our journey in the morning with the gut feeling breakfast. The trail goes uphill towards the ridge of the mountain where we reach a viewpoint called Unsisha at 3100m from there trail thraverse through the head of the ridge all the way to Kaumadanda. The province contains rhodondern,fir and juniper trees mostly.  

Day 5 Trek to Dobate

We start our journey early in the morning after having breakfast. The trail goes all the way uphill passing through small bushes of rhododendron and on the way we pass through a beautiful small lake called Kalo Pokhari at 3930m altitude. We cross a few passes like Shipton pass 4125m, Keke la 4170 and descend down to our place for overnight stay. 

Day 6 Trek to Yangla Kharka

After having breakfast we start early in morning. The trail goes downhill and traverses through the trail high above mighty Barun river. The province is very desolate and barren here it mostly consists of Pastureland.  

Day 7 Trek to Langmale Kharka

The journey begins after having breakfast. The trail goes through the right hand side of the valley passing through the moraine route. The walk is very scenic and we can see the spectacular view of towering peaks like Peak 5, Peak 7, Yaupa, Peak 4, Honku Chuli and Mt Makalu. The places we pass through are Yak Kharka, Merak and finally Langmale Kharka.

Day 8 Trek to Makalu Base Camp

We begin our journey after having the energizing breakfast. The trail passes through the moraine route with a delightful magnificent mountain view. We walk gradually uphill listening to the cracking sound of glaciers from the meltdown of ice.  

Day 9 Excursion around Makalu Base Camp

Today is rest day, after having breakfast we walk uphill towards peak 3 Danda. The walk takes 4 hour back and forth. We can see breathtaking spectacular mountain views as well as glaciers from where mighty Barun river originates. We sleep overnight at Makalu base camp which enhances the ability to withstand high altitude.

Day 10 Trek to Swiss Base Camp

The walk goes through rugged trails through glaciers and moraines thus we start full gut eating energetic breakfast. From today adventure reaches the next level enhancing tolerability against rough terrain. We get to see the magnificent view of Mt Makalu 8468m just above your forehead. Our guide and Sherpa take good care of the entire team while walking. We took a packed launch on this day while some crew walked before the team set up camp at Swiss base camp 5150m. 

Day 11 Trek to Sherpani Col Base Camp

We started trekking with a highly calorie delicious breakfast. We walk through the alleyway above the Barun glacier which splits towards the left side and ascends through gully. After ascending nearly 500 meter we reached our camp site at Sherpani Col Base Camp at 5688m altitude. We have a splendid view of Massive Mt Makalu, Chago, SE peak, Peak 5. You get a really tough excursion on this day.

Day 12 Trek to Baruntse Base Camp

We start early in the morning after having a warm and energetic breakfast. The route goes ascending all the way up to Sherpani col 6180m. your guide will fix the ropes, make the track and assist the entire crew to cross the pass. The surrounding is so beautiful, truly heaven you get to witness real Shangrila you can see some of the world’s tallest mountains including Mt Makalu, SE peak, Chago peak,Kali Himal, Hunku peak, Imja Tse aka Island peak. After crossing Sherpani col we walk over the icy flat and cross another pass called West Col 6143m and we descend down using ropes to the glacier from where we walk all the way to Baruntse Base camp 5400m.

Day 13 Trek to Amphu Labsta Base Camp

We commence an excursion after having breakfast. We walk downhill all the way down close to the glacier and walk on the left hand side of the valley towards the south. Moreover, we walk north again after crossing the glacier. The trek consists of mesmerizing mountain views including a bunch of lakes along the way.

Day 14 Trek to Chhukung

We commence our journey early morning after the gut feeling energizing breakfast. We ascend up towards amphu labsta through the sharp ridge. Your guide and sherpa will fix the rope and assist the entire team to cross the pass. The excursion is tough albeit its very scenic with breathtaking flabbergasting sceneries. After crossing the pass we descend down across Amphu labsta glacier and traverse through the moraine route. You can see Imja lake which was formed due to glacier meltdown. We take packed launches.

Day 15 Trek to Lobuche

Today some of the supporting crew carrying camping gear and kitchen utensils will leave the group thus before trekking you can express your grevience and commend them. The trail goes uphill all the way to Khangma la top 5535 m through the pasture land and loose rock trail. The spectacular 360 view from several mountains of Everest and Makalu region will blow your mind. After that we descend all the way downhill to Khumbu glacier and cross through glacier and climb a small mound of moraine.  

Day 16 Trek to Gorakshep and Visit Everest Base Camp

We start early morning after taking gut feeling breakfast. The trail goes through the edge above Khumbu glacier. The trail consists of walk through pasture land, moraine, loose rock. You can see an eye -catching view of Mt Pumori 7165m, Lingtren 6749m, Khumbutse 6665m, Mt Everest 8848m, Nuptse 7861m, Nireka peak 6159m etc. Some more mountain we can see are Cholatse, Arakmtse, Taboche etc. After 3 hour of walk we reach Gorakshep which is the last stop for EBC trek where we stop, have launch, find our room and trek to Everest base camp 5365m which takes 4 hour back and forth.  

Day 17 Trek to Phortse and Visit Kalapathar

We climb Kalapathar early in the morning in order to see the perfect Everest panorama. Visiting Everest base camp doesn’t quench your thirst to see perfect Everest panorama thus we must have to climb Kalapathar 5545m. We can see dozens of mountains from the top of Kalapathar thus it is very crucial to visit. We walk back to Gorak Shep. Moreover, have breakfast and trek down to Pheriche 4200m. We can see an amazing view of Mt Amadablam while descending down from Thokla Pass 4750m.  

Day 18 Trek to Namche Bazaar

Journey commences after gut feeling breakfast we walk downhill through the pastureland passing through villages like Somare, Pangboche, Tengboche, Lausasa etc. Today you can feel the joy of greeting the locals and chatting with kids. We can visit the monastery to express gratitude and blessing. We stop at Tengboche monastery and visit the premises. After Tengboche we walk downhill all the way to Phunki tenga where we take launch and after we ascend a bit up to Sanasa and go through a wide and flat trail until Namche. We can see a mind blowing view of the mountain so don’t forget to look back. You can celebrate evening at Namch because there are plenty of choices for shops, bars, and restaurants.

Day 19 Trek to Lukla

After breakfast we commence our trek downhill all the way to Hillary Bridge through lush green forest of Pine, fir, rhododendron. After Hillary bridge we follow river Dudhkoshi all the way down to Phakding. We pass through several beautiful Sherpa villages full of smiling and welcoming people. We stop for launch at Phakding and push toward Lukla. 

Day 20 Flight to Kathmandu Valley

Early morning after breakfast we walked to Airport for to fly back to Kathmandu. The flight takes 30 minutes which consists of eye catching Himalayan view.
