Langtang Lirung Expedition is the exciting and thrilling activity of climbing the Mt Langtang Lirung with the best views of the surrounding Himalayas in the Langtang Valley. Langtang Lirung is the highest peak of the Langtang Himal and as such one of the more important mountains of the Central Nepalese Himalaya.
This mountain is also known as the Mt. Langtang I. The Langtang Himal, lying to the north of Kathmandu and being readily accessible from there, is a complex range, its western border defined by the Bhote Kosi (later on known as the Trisuli), beyond which rises the Ganesh Himal. To the east it is connected to the Jugal Himal, to the northeast to the big massif of Shisha Pangma, while to the immediate north the Lende Tsangpo forms the natural border to Tibet. Langtang Lirung itself is a bulky mountain with a 10 km long west to east running ridge that culminates at its eastern end in the actual summit.
Langtang Lirung Expedition is a serious challenge for any party, because it is either technically very difficult (the west ridge), subject to a good deal of objective dangers ( the east ridge), or both (the south face). Towards the western end of the long ridge is a significant notch beyond which rises the shapely peak of Chenge Lirung (6581m), also known as Langtang II, first- climbed in 1963 by the Canadian Peter Taylor. The Langtang Lirung Expedition is a difficult Peak to climb. Similarly, Lirung offers unlimited challenges filled with excitement and thrill, making it a perfect option for adventure-seeking mountaineers. The Langtang region remained largely unknown and mysterious until Bill Tillman’s exploration around 1949. Many attempts have been made for the climb of Langtang Lirung summit. However, the British Expedition team made the first successful ascent of Langtang Lirung in 1973.
One needs to be physically and mentally sound and good with proper endurance ability in order to keep going in the expedition. It offers several climbing routes from Kyanjin Gompa Valley. Langtang Lirung has a large south face which is a matter of headache for the climbers and mountaineers. According to the record, there have been 14 ascents to Langtang Lirung among which 13 have been unsuccessful attempts. You will also get the opportunity to explore the scenic beauty of Langtang National Park where you can find different floras and faunas. Acclimatization is very crucial at higher altitudes to ensure the successful summit climb and to avoid mental and physical sickness.
The journey starts from Kathmandu with a beautiful ride through the zig- zag hilly roads. During the whole drive you can enjoy the stunning views of Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and Langtang Himalayan Ranges. After 7 to 8 hours of driving you will reach your destination of trekking.
From Dhunche you will start your trek over a dusty motor road towards Syabrubesi. You will reach a small village of Thulo Bharkhu which indicates the start of the trekking trail. The trail then gently climbs through oak and pine filled forest towards Barbal. You will continue your trek on an easy undulating trek that goes along the forest and with glimpses of Ganesh Himal and the beautiful Langtang valley. After a while, you will reach the ridge top of Thulo Syabru Village. The village is inhabited by the Tamang ethnic community.
The trekking from this point starts with an uphill hike through the beautiful pine and rhododendron forest. There is about an hour climb through the steep hill to reach an interesting and amazing place called Bamboo. It is the place where trekkers take rest and have lunch to regenerate their body energy. The trail continues upwards through the bamboo forest to reach the final destination for today’s Lama Hotel which is the quiet famous area of this place.
The Langtang village lies at the altitude of about 3430 metres from sea level. The trails start with the rhododendron and pine forests along with the scenic paths of waterfalls and landscapes. Nature will make you feel intrigued as you enter the interesting wide valley of Langtang. This is the home to the famous Langtang National Park which is the habitat to many wild lives. The trekkers stop at the famous GhodaTabela for lunch before heading towards the Langtang village and up the Langtang Valley to Mundu.
The trek to the Kyanjin Gompa is relatively shorter than other trekking days. The trail passes through the watermills, chorten (Buddhist Shrines) and prayer wheels on the way to Kyanjin Gompa. The Kyanjin Gompa lies at the altitude of 3870 metres from the sea level. This route also acts as an acclimatization day before climbing Tserko Ri in the morning. The trekkers can explore the gompa and surrounding area and take in the mountain views in the afternoon.
The trekking approximately takes about 5- 6 hours to reach the summit of Tserko Ri. From here you can see the majestic and amazing views of Yala Peak 5520m, Langtang Ri 7205m, Langtang Lirung 7227m and Naya Khang 5844m. Here you can enjoy your packed lunch while enjoying the majestic views of the mountains and landscapes. After this, trekkers descend back to the Kyanjin Gompa where they will again spend the night.
You will leave Kyanjin Gompa and follow the trail that descends down to the Langtang Lirung Glacier. The trek goes over the leveled path and along the side of the glacier. Soon, you will follow a rising trail that leads to a good campsite, also known as Langtang Lirung Base Camp. Once at the campsite the Sherpa crew will quickly set up the base camp and start making necessary preparations for setting up additional camps above base camp before the main summit climb.
You will spend several days doing climbing training practices and trek between the camps for the best acclimatization. The Sherpa crew will perform all the hard work from carrying and setting up additional camps at higher altitudes, providing healthy and hygienic meals, finding appropriate and safe climbing routes. Fully acclimatized and properly equipped with all the climbing gears you will follow the footsteps and guidance of experienced climbing experts. Overcoming several technical climbing sections and taking weather conditions into consideration, you will head towards the summit of Langtang Lirung. Once at the top you are rewarded with mind capturing views of Langtang Himalayan Ranges, Pemthang Karpo, Gangchenpo, Shishapangma that rises across the border of Tibet and several surrounding high peaks. You will spend short quality time at the summit and descend following the same route all the way back to the base camp.
Having achieved your target – the summit of Langtang Lirung, you will make a relaxed start and prepare for your return journey. You will retrace your steps back on the same trail that heads back to Kyanjin Gompa. From there you will continue to retrace your steps by descending over the moraine of Lirung glacier. Easy trekking from there will lead back to Lama Hotel.
Syabrubesi will provide you with the opportunity to take the final photographs and memories from the Langtang region. The trekkers can enjoy this moment and appreciate their last day by enjoying the different Himalayan cuisines and drinks. They will stay overnight here and prepare for the departure to the Kathmandu valley.
This is the last day of the trek in Langtang Valley. The trekkers will bid farewell to the Langtang mountains and drive back to Kathmandu bringing wonderful memories and photographs with you.
Langtang Lirung Expedition is beautiful as well as thrilling activities. You will get a chance to experience the beautiful nature of the Langtang valley with the unique culture and tradition of Tamang ethnicity.
