History of Hotel Shanker

The actual palace of the Hotel was built by the General Jit Shumsher Rana by hiring the fine and talented architect Kumar Narsigh Rana. Items such as gilt mirrors, velvet, mirror and sunburst chandeliers were imported from Europe. The exteriors were constructed in the neoclassical style and the construction was completed in 1894 AD. After the end of the Rana rule in the country the palace was bought by the Late Mr Ram Shanker Shrestha in 1964 AD. It was converted into the hotel , commencing operations with 23 rooms.  His ingenious concept of maintaining the old age beauty and merging it with modern comforts is the existence of Hotel Shanker.

Design of Hotel Shanker

Situated near the previous Royal Palace, the magnificently restored historic boutique hotel stands in the hub of the commercial city. The hotel showcases the grandeur of the European colonial influenced architecture which was introduced in Nepal in the 18th century by the Rana rulers. It is nested in a manicured neoclassical garden. The heritage hotel is adorned with a Victorian gazebo, exquisite Rocco works and wrought iron verandas.  It embodies the ideal of a quintessential Victorian-era architecture furnished with antiques, arts and artefacts .  The hotel still has the items from the Rana regime such as gilt mirrors, velvet, marble and sunburst chandeliers which were imported from Europe.
