Guide to Nepal’s Hilly Region

The Hilly Region, at the middle belt of the country, surrounded by Himalayan region and Terri region at North and south occupies around 64% of the total land. This region in the North is almost all occupied by the Mahabharata range with high hills and dense forests. And below the Mahabharata range at the southern part there lies the Siwalik range which is covered by lower hills and valleys. The Char Kosher Jade, a dense forest that begins from Mahabharata range and ends at the border of Nepal.

India in the Terri was very big and large at past but it is small at present. The hilly region in the heart of Nepal is sheltered by a heavy mass of people (about 57% of total). It is famous for fertile valleys like Kathmandu and Pokhara. The hills and Snow fed Rivers that pass across the high hills and valleys behaving as the life support system of the area. It holds half of the total population as it has been sheltered for centuries. 

This valley holds most of Nepal’s ethnic groups. But in them Newer are the original inhabitants and the creators of the valley’s grand civilization. Before some years ago, it was covered with temples and shrines which were more than houses. This valley comprises three amazing cities of great historic and cultural interest, Kathmandu; Lalitpur of Patan and Bhaktapur. The tranquility of the magnificence of the Himalayas rising behind creates a mood of peace and silence. So, Pokhara city has not only become the centre for most popular trekking and rafting targets. But also a spot to relax with the beauty of nature. The backwater regions of the Himalayas are the land of Magars and Gurungs, laborious farmers. And fearless warriors who have received worldwide fame as Gurkha soldiers.

Kathmandu Valley

The Kathmandu valley, the capital, political, commercial and cultural center of Nepal covers a large area of 360 sq. km. and is situated at an altitude of 1336 meters above the sea-level. It is a glamorous and fascinating showcase of a very wealthy culture, art and tradition. It is an unevenly oval bowl measuring 24 km east to west and 19 km south to north and is enclosed by a range of green ridged hills and dotted by compact clusters of red tiled-roofed houses. An amazing legend declares that the valley was once covered by a lake until Bodhisattva Manjushree extended his sword of perception and divided a passage through the mountain walls, draining the water and establishing the first settlements.

Pokhara Valley

Pokhara, an incredible place of natural beauty is situated at an altitude of 827 meters above the sea level. It is 200 km from Kathmandu valley and is also known as the center of travel. This fascinating city with a population of 95,000 is decorated with several beautiful lakes and a splendid panoramic scene of the Himalayas. The tranquility of the magnificence of the Himalayas rising behind creates a mood of peace and silence. So, this city has not only become the centre for most popular trekking and rafting targets but also a spot to relax with the beauty of nature. The backwater regions of the Himalayas are the land of Magars and Gurungs, laborious farmers and fearless warriors who have received worldwide fame as Gurkha soldiers.

The climate here is a little warmer than Kathmandu with day hour temperature around 15 degrees Celsius in winter and 35 degrees Celsius in summer. Monsoon season (mid June – mid September) is very wet. It is the only place which receives the highest rainfall in the country. The two districts known as Dam side and Lakeside are the best places to visit. Likewise, some others are: Pew Lake, Began and Rapa Lake, Brahe temple, World peace pagoda, Devi’s fall, Mahindra cave, Bind basin temple etc. 

Tansen

Tansen, an earliest hill town, influenced by Newer migrants from the Kathmandu valley. Moreover, with its architecture is waiting to be revealed by the tourists, is positioned at the southern slope of the Mahabharata range; around half way from the Indian border to Pokhara and the Himalayas. This city offers an occasion to feed the pure Nepalese culture. Different from westernized places like Thamal in Kathmandu or Lakeside in Pokhara. Ancient imaginative newer residence and paved streets shape the town. Similarly, the hills of here allow mind-blowing views of the Himalayan range from Mt. Gnash in the east to Dhaulagiri in the west. Tansen is the district running headquarters of Palpa district, out of 75 districts in Nepal. It has been declared a Municipality since 1957. About 13,000 populations of Palpalies settle in this core.

As it is at an altitude of 1350 meters above sea level, its climate is pleasant throughout the year. The maximum temperature, even in early monsoon times, hardly exceeds 310 Celsius and only in December/January the maximum temperature can fall below 10 degree Celsius. The annual rainfall here is about 1500 mm.

Gorkha

Gorkha, at an altitude of 1135 meter and 140 km west of Kathmandu, is the inherited homeland of Nepal’s ruling majestic family. It is only 18 km up a tiled road of the Pokhara-Kathmandu highway. A brief visit on the way to or from pokhara would offer more vision into Nepal. Than one is possible to get at lakeside in pokhara. Gurkhas town is historically a very important town of Nepal since it is small. From the hilltop castle, King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the ninth generation parental forefather of the present king. Similarly, started his lifetime effort to unite the impartial kingdoms of Nepal.

An eagerly impressive plan which was achieved due to his genius soldiers. The British characterized “Gurkha” developed from the name Gorkha, referring to the renowned fighting soldiers of this region. Gorkha’s centre of attention is the glorious gorkha durbar with a fort. Moreover, a palace and a temple with outstanding views of the surrounding valleys, and the Makalu range. Beside, Gorakhnath cave and Gorkha Bazaar are the wonderful places here.
