Bada Dashain

Dashain is a greatest festival of Hindu people of Nepal. It is also celebrated as Dashera in India. Dashain is the longest and in the Bikram Sambat and Nepal Sambat annual calendar. People get long vacation and returns thier hometown from all parts of the world so that they can celebrate it with their family. All government offices, educational institutions and other offices gets in vacation. This festival falls in middle of the BS calendar. It is a ten day long festival.

Day 1: Ghatasthapana dashain

Ghatasthapana is thestarting of Dashain. In this day the Kalash is filled with holy water. And then barley seeds are sewn. This is done ina seperate room known as the Dashain Ghar. Outsiders are not allowed to enter in Dashain ghar. The Kalash is protected from direct sunlight. The holy water is changed every day. This seed will grow into Jamara which is the most important for the final day of Dashain.

Day 7: Phulpati

In this day, the royal Kalash, banana stalks, Jamara and sugar cane tied with red cloth is brought by Brahmins from Gorkha. Lots of government officials gather in tudikhel to witness the salution ceremony performed by the Nepal army. All the stuffs brought from gorkha is taken to Hanuman dhoka palace. But now the stuffs are taken to the residence of the president.

Day 8: ‘Maha Asthami’

The eighth day is worshipped the most fierce of Goddess Durga’s. Sacrifice of buffaloes, goats, hens and ducks are done in temples throughout the nation. On the night of this day the Dasain Ghar is busy on scrificing of a total of 54 buffaloes and 54 goats. The blood are offered and the meats are taken home as prasad.

Day 9: ‘Maha Navami’

The ninth day of dashain is Mahanavami. This day the god of creation is worshiped. The people also worship thier tools, machines and vehicles. The taleju temple is opened once a year in this day.

Day 10: Bijaya Dashami or Vijaya Dashami

The final day of the dashain is the bijaya dashami. In this day the elder members of the family give blessings and put tika to thier younger family memmbers. Childerns fly kites and wear new clothes. Families eat delicious foods and gather together.
